One-Hit Shutout Leads Waleska over Atlanta

Panthersville, GA – Matthew Gist and Seth Darling combined for a one-hit shutout to lead the Waleska Wild Things (3-0) to a 10-0 run-rule victory over the Atlanta Blues (1-2) in eight innings at the GSU Baseball Complex on Friday night.

A rising senior from SIU-Edwardsville, Gist (1-0) got the start in his season debut and dominated with nine strikeouts to just one walk in 5.1 scoreless innings. The Cumming, Ga. native took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing Atlanta’s lone hit, a bunt-single down the left-field line by Chandler Hicks.

Seth Darling came on to pitch in the sixth and finished the shutout with 2.2 scoreless, hitless innings, allowing just two walks with a strikeout.

Equally impressive, Waleska’s offense scattered 10 runs on 11 hits. Louis Dion went a perfect 3-for-3, scoring two runs with a walk and one RBI, and Cade Fuller and Hutson Miles each went 2-for-4 with two RBI. One of Fuller’s RBI came on a home run, his second of the season, in the fifth inning.

Waleska jumped out front with four runs on four hits and an error in the first and never looked back, scoring one run each in the fourth and fifth, three in the sixth, and one in the eighth.

Atlanta starter Logan Bergren (0-1) pitched five innings and recorded six strikeouts but absorbed the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits with two walks.

Both teams will face each other again at the GSU Baseball Complex on Saturday, June 8, at 7:05 p.m.
